More on Scouts and Gays

Filed under: Blogosphere — Robert @ 3:19 pm

Over at my personal blog I have a somewhat lengthy post up talking about Scouting and gay rights. I would crosspost it but it has a bunch of links, and I don’t want to trackback-spam the blogs I’m linking to, so I’ll just point you in the right direction. Or the wrong direction, depending your point of view 😉

  1. what does the latest swimsuit model have to do with gays and boy scouts?

  4. The more Christian dominated, exclusionary focus of the Boy Scouts (compared to the tolerant phase it was in during my tenure when it made big strides by expressly embracing UUs, Muslims and Hinuds, e.g., and had no anti-gay policy) is the reason that I absolutely refuse to involve my son in the organization (my wife and I have discussed it a few times) despite the fact that I was in Scouting from Cub Scount to Eagle Scout.

I don’t want my kids to be in an organization that condemns people like me (an atheist) and people like a lot of my clients (gays and lesbians), political colleagues (including two state legislators and a fellow Democratic party officer) and friends, many of whom are parents of his classmates.

Unfortunately, lots of men who are outwardly heterosexual sexually abuse boys. It has been a problem in almost every organization that deals with children. For example, in greater Denver, there was recently a case like that involving an Evangelical Christian Youth Minister.

Your sexual orientation is usually invisible, and often denied especially by the conservative types who currently tend to get involved in scouting (think Larry Craig or the Florida Congressman involved in the page scandal).

An “out” gay scout leader is better than one in the closet. At least is someone like that makes overtures, everyone is alert to what is happening and what chemistry is involved.

The Scouts do have a right to discriminate, but they don’t have a right to do it and expect to receive public support for their beliefs, or private support from a lot of former Scouts who were taught growing up that acting morally is important.

  5. Ridiculous at best, I see some people out there need good sex to get this stuff out of their systems.

The show “To catch a predator” teaches that while some gay men are out to get young boys, the large majority are straight men who want young girls.

Do we prevent gays from being coaches in the little league, afterall locker rooms are quite an easier pray for perverts. Give me some statistics as to what is the percentage of straight idiotic fathers who have sex with their daughters. If that percentage is lower than the chances of a scout leader doing his little scout, then I agree. Otherwise lets get those little girls away from their fathers if we really want to solve the problem once and for all.

You do know that by talking over and over again about this topic, I can’t but wonder why this is so important to you.
