Well, So Much for Rudy…

He demands (promises?) public funding for abortions – on the novel grounds that the government must pay for Constitutional rights!

When asked directly Wednesday if he still supported the use of public funding for abortions, Giuliani said “Yes.”

“If it would deprive someone of a constitutional right,” he explained, “If that’s the status of the law, yes.”

I’ll expect my free gun, newspaper, and church in the mail, I guess.

His aides later “clarified” his remarks to indicate he supports the status quo (which is funding in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the mother’s life), but this was rhetorical suicide.

  1. An open mouth gathers no foot.

Clarifying after the fact still leaves your initial comments unmolested for your opponents’ political ammunition.

The only reason Rudy will make it past South Carolina is that he will still have a veritable ton of money to throw around. He certainly won’t land a top-two finish in any of the First Four at the rate he constantly puts his foot in his mouth. That will doom his White House ambitions.

Who knows? He might end up getting beat by Tom Tancredo’s efforts in Iowa.

  2. If one believes in a mature society that citizens are entitled to free basic health care and that abortions should be practiced only by health care providers, then his comment makes a lot of sense to me.

  3. When Rudy runs for President of France, that will be material.

  5. Yeah, I’m sure you have quite a list of countries that aren’t the US. Have fun with it.
