Creative Destruction

What Domain Name Would We Like?

Filed under: Blog Status — Ampersand @ 5:18 pm

I know that I promised to look into this in May, but you know how things go… Anyhow, I’m thinking that it’s time to move Creative Destruction to its own server. I’m tired of not being able to install cool plug-ins.

These server names are available:

creativedestructionblog.com
creative-destruction.com
c-d-blog.com

And also, if we change the blog’s name to “Cognitive Dissonance,” then we could also choose:

cognitivedissonanceblog.com
cognitive-dissonance.net
c-d-blog.com

(Unfortunately, “cognitivedissonance.info,” which Darran suggested in May, is no longer available.)

Or we could call ourselves “We Are Here To Argue”; weareheretoargue.com is available. But probably I’m the only one who’ll like that idea.

Please post opinions and name suggestions (you can use a webpage like this one to check what domain names are available) in the comments. If no consensus emerges, or if it seems like no one cares enough to leave comments 🙂 , then I’ll go ahead and set up creative-destruction.com.

  1. I like “We Are Here To Argue”.

But I’m also very easy when it comes to the name.

  2. cdblog.org is available.

Edited to add: When it comes to domain names, short is better. I personally dislike hyphens. It makes it look like you couldn’t get the domain you wanted. 🙂

  3. No strong preference on the domain name, but I do like the blog title you’ve got so I would vote to keep it. “Creative Destruction” is memorable and has a nice ring to it. I think “Cognitive Dissonance” is too overworked to use for a blog title.

  4. (Then again, “The Argument Clinic” would be sorta catchy … )

  5. I agree with Daran about hyphenated URLs. They just seem kludgy, not to mention awkward to type into a browser bar. If only creativedestruction.com was not only available, but also didn’t have a blog already attached to it.

However, I might say that parentheticalcomments.com is perfectly available. Seeing as we all use them and everything. (Side snark at Adam, whose comment I cannot find at the moment.)

  7. I don’t care a lot one way or the other, but I agree with the comments discouraging long, hyphenated names. I rather like Asher’s suggestion that we use Bob’s abandoned name: Argument Clinic (probably ought to avoid anything beginning with “the”). Off Colfax’s suggestion is also good but too long.

  8. Asher Abrams:

A quick search confirms the truth of your observation.

    Off Colfax:

If only creativedestruction.com was not only available, but also didn’t have a blog already attached to it.

I thought of “creative dissonance”, but it looks as though someone got there before me.

How about “Constructive Dissonance”? (I rather like the idea of changing the name, but keeping the initials.)

Edited to add: Even though constructivedissonance.* are all available, I’d still prefer cdblog.org.

  9. If no consensus congeals around any of my wonderful ideas, I’d throw my weight behind “Argument Clinic”. argumentclinic.info and acblog.org are available. I’d prefer the latter.

  10. Er, “Argument Clinic” is taken.

    Comment by Robert — September 2, 2006 @ 3:18 pm | Reply

  11. So what? Yes, “Argument Clinic” is already being used by someone or other, but there were blogs called “creative destruction” before this one. Let’s let the market decide! 😀

Seriously, my vote is for “cdblog.org.” It’s short, easy to type, and it leaves us the option of keeping the name “Creative Destruction” but switching it to some other “C.D.” name at some point in the future, if we want.

  12. Don’t make me come over there and dilute your gamut. I’ll do it!

The problem with cdblog.org or any other name that doesn’t have the name of the blog in it is that it’s harder to attract traffic when knowing the name of the blog isn’t enough to get you there. Everyone can find Instapundit. It’s a little trickier to find Alas. cdblog.org would not be most people’s first guess .

  13. I’ve dropped the guy running the other CD a note. Maybe we can get the domain from him.

  14. How about Random Comments?

    randomcomments.net
    randomcomments.info

    Both are available.

    Or The Argument Bureau?

    theargumentbureau.net
    theargumentbureau.info
    theargumentbureau.com

  15. Would it be against the blog ethos for us to agree on a name?

    Comment by Daran — September 2, 2006 @ 7:58 pm | Reply

  16. cdblog.org…

I don’t know about that. Sounds like a blog about Compact Disks. Otherwise, it’s short and nice.

I also want to keep Creative Destruction as a name.

Would it be against the blog ethos for us to agree on a name?

Not if we have a big argument before that.

  17. Hi, I came here because someone from your blog solicited me to buy my domain. I’ve only spent a brief amount of time here on your site, but I haven’t been able to understand what your blog has to do with creative destruction?

    cheers!

  18. Hi, Sameer. I’m the one who contacted you.

We call it creative destruction because we all like the Schumpeterian idea that before you can create, something has to destroy what was there before. It’s basically just a shorthand for the arguing and contention that we have between all our various points of view.

    Comment by Robert — September 6, 2006 @ 10:09 pm | Reply

  19. Ah, thanks. I like applying the Creative Destruction concept to things that aren’t directly within the realm of what Schumpeter had to say, but hadn’t thought of it really applying to ideas per se.

    Comment by Sameer Parekh — September 6, 2006 @ 11:29 pm | Reply

  20. Actually I was kidding about the Argument Clinic idea (though I think it’s a great name for a blog). Creative Destruction is great, and even if you’re one of the dummies like me who had to google the phrase to get the reference, it still captures the spirit of the blog perfectly.

    Comment by Asher Abrams — September 7, 2006 @ 5:56 pm | Reply

  21. So, Robert (or Sameer): Any word on if we have a chance at the creativedestruction.com domain name? If not, we should go back to other ideas.

If we can’t get creativedestruction.com, do people feel it’s important that we get a nameofourblog.com address? If so, we should start limiting our choices to names that available as dot coms.
